I’ll admit, I’ve thrifted a couple of gifts for people before and each time they have loved what they received. If you’re debating as to if thrifting gifts are right here are a couple of reasons when it may just be okay to give a gift from a thrift store
It’s a one-of-a-kind item
One of my favorite purses is from the thrift store and that is because it is a one-of-a-kind item. If you know there is no chance of finding something like the item you want to get for your loved one then by all means thrift it! You can even let them know it was from the thrift store for full transparency and that you couldn’t find anything that you thought they would like more
They are okay with thrift
If you are dealing with a fellow thrifter, someone that appreciates the circular economy, or a person that doesn’t have hangups about receiving items from the thrift store then by all means move forward with the purchase
It has sentimentality

Things like old board games, vintage books or cameras, classic retro clothing, or authentic designer duds, may be right up the personas alley that you are buying a gift for. Nine times out of ten they will most likely understand that many times the items that represent sentimental life moments or childhood memories like old games or toys are going to be used and purchased second hand
Let’s look at a couple of scenarios when it may not be okay to thrift a gift
Thrift aversions
When the person has an aversion to used items especially clothes don’t thrift their gifts even if the tags are attached. Refrain from purchasing anything thrift if you know the person won’t appreciate the sentiment.
Your Motives are off
When your reasoning behind it is solely frugality think twice about being cheap. While saving money is usually a goal for those of us that shop at thrift stores if your main reason for purchasing a gift from the thrift store is because you don’t want to spend money on something new even though you can afford to, you may want to rethink your motives.
If you’re still apprehensive about thrifting a gift but see something your loved one will enjoy, try mixing in some new items as well, anyone would be excited to receive a gift basket full of goodies they love regardless of if they were old or new.
What are your thoughts on gifting thrift store items? Is it tacky or tasteful? Would you thrift a Christmas or birthday gift?
